Hello and welcome to Lains
If you are reading this, you might be one of the many bright graduates in Zimbabwe who finished school, got your degree, but are still waiting for that "job" to call you. We know it is very very hard and difficult. You have the qualifications (certficates, diploms or degrees) at whateever level but the companies are not hiring. Whilst this might be dishertning but here is the honest and plain truth, you do not need a whitecollar job to be that someone or to be very successful in life. All you need is an idea and the courage as well as passion to start at a very small scale.
Here are 4 simple business ideas that are perfect and practical for unemployed graduates. They don’t require a lot of capital, just your brain and your phone thats it.
1. Tutoring & Assignment Help
You just spent four or five years at university mastering a particular field of study or subject. Why throw that knowledge away?
Many students (and even busy professionals) need help.
· The Idea: Offer tutoring in your best subject (Maths, English, Accounting, etc.) to high school students. There are many learners who are preapring to sit for their final examinations at the end of the year and they need help. You can also help university students with research and assignments (ethically, of course!).
· How to start: You don't need a classroom. Use your living room, or offer to go to the student's home. Use WhatsApp status to advertise. Charge per hour or per subject.
Why it works: Parents are always looking for extra lessons for their children as they really want them to pass. They trust graduates
2. The Data Bundle Dealer
In Zimbabwe over eighty percent of working population and about fifty five percent of students use cellphones and therefore data is like gold. Everyone needs it for school, work, WhatsApp, Tiktok, Instagram, facebook and so on on internet. But many people, especially in the suburbs, don't want to go into town to buy it.
· The Idea: Buy data bundles in bulk from Econet, NetOne, or Telecel and resell them at a small profit.
· How to start: You just need airtime on your phone. Advertise on your Facebook and WhatsApp: "I sell data and bundles. DM for quick transfers."
· Why it works: It is a service that is needed every single day. If you are reliable, customers will keep coming back. Customer service is thus very key so that you retain and attract more customers.
3. The "Runnerman" / Errand Service
Many working people in Harare or Bulawayo are too tired or too busy to stand in long queues. They need to pay bills at the council, buy groceries, or send documents across town.
· The Idea: You become the person who runs these errands for a fee.
· How to start: Let people know you are available. Charge a small delivery fee based on distance and time of the day. If you don't have a car, use a kombi. The profit is in the service fee, not the transport.
Why it works: It solves a major pain point for busy people: lack of time
4. Content Creation (YouTube/TikTok)
Wait, don't close the page! You don't need to be a comedian. You just need to be an expert.
· The Idea: Start a YouTube channel or TikTok page teaching what you know.
· Content Ideas:
o If you studied IT: Teach people how to fix common phone problems.
o If you studied Agriculture: Show people how to start a small garden at home.
o If you studied Literature: Review Zimbabwean books.
· How to make money: Once you get followers, you can get brand deals, or YouTube will pay you for views.
· Why it works: People love learning from real people, not just big celebrities.
Final Words of Encouragement
My dear graduate, your degree is not wasted neither is it useless. It gave you the discipline and the brainpower to figure things out as well as the ability to analyse trends and environmental factors. Use that brain to start a business today. It might start small, but with hard work, it can grow into something big.
