Global Leadership Intiative
Ethics form the foundation of any normal and indeed of the initiative. During workshops the participants are trained in areas to do with transparency, integrity, accountability mechanisms, and responsible decision making. Such workshops in Gweru are held at the American Corner library because it is central making accessibility easy. The goal is to cultivate leaders of all spheres who put community interests over personal gain and who understand governance frameworks at local and national levels. At international level Mahatma Gandhi is considered as one among many who was an ethical leader. This beacuse it is believed he was a firm advocate for a single standard of conduct rooted in dharma of truth and nonviolence. Mahatma Gandhi is credited for successfully leading nonviolent struggles against such issues as racial discrimination. As a leader was very instrumental in dealing with economic and social exploitation whilst at the same time ensuring no moral degradation in India.
The initiative places strong emphasis on youth empowerment whether from colleges such as Mkoba Teachers' college or Midlands State University (MSU). MSU is home to over 4000 undergraduates. Training modules focus on topics including public speaking, strategic planning, financial literacy, project management, and documentation systems. Participants gain both soft skills and technical competencies necessary for leading sustainable initiatives such as the current Zimbabwe Village Business Units being rolled out by the Zimbabwe government. These should also dovetale with intiatives encouraged by UNICEF and also blocks such as the European Union, African Uninion and Asia Pacific Cooperation.
One aspect of GLI is that it requires participants to work on real community projects or initiatives. Each leader should carry out a needs analysis of a local issue within a particular community. They then develop an action plan guided by the bylaws of that locality. Should mobilize stakeholders then work with them to come up with measurable interventions which are impactful.
Facilatators expect attendees to move in ine with mdoern trends. An emphasis is put on continous learning/improvement. Thus the initiative emphasizes data driven decision making. This means participants are trained on tracking beneficiaries using demographic data and categories. Financial records are important over and above demographics. Through monitoring tools measurement of outputs should be done. Evaluation is a key cmponent that speaks to long term outcomes.
The demand for ethical, visionary, and community centered leadership is becoming louder and louder. Across Zimbabwe and many developing nations, communities are going through difficult economic and social challenges. In order to address these challenges it requires more than temporary interventions but requires a leadership who are ethical in all dealings. They should be strategic and make use of SMART objectives. Doing this makes them accountable and focused on nothing but community realities.
The Global Leadership Initiative (GLI) was established to respond to leadership gaps. At a global scale an example of closing leadership gaps was done on the 1st of January in 2017 when António Guterres became the Secretary of the United Nations. It is a structured leadership development platform focused on equipping youth and emerging leaders with practical skills that allows measurable implementation which should translate training into impact.
GLI will continue with trodding on its vision which will see training over 1,000 youth leaders every year whilst establishing regional leadership hubs. Hosting and hosting of national leadership forums to continue with more intensity. Publishing of annual impact reports to be done as a way of tracking progress. Hybrid learning models are also part of the growth strategy.
