As the population grows and people use more packaged products the amount of plastic waste also increases big time. Many people buy bottled drinks packaged snacks and other goods that come in plastic containers beacuse many companies use these for pachaging. The pronlem is that after using them these are often thrown away without thinking about where they will end up at.

When waste is dumped in the environment, it creates many challenges for us. The land automatically becomes dirty and unpleasant at all. Natural areas that should be clean and healthy become very polluted. Such waste also blocks water channels and drainage systems which in many Zimbabwe towns has become an annual problem. During the rainy season, this can cause flooding because water cannot flow freely this as a result also of human mindset.
Plastic pollution also harms animals in many different ways with cows being the biggest affected. Sometimes animals eat plastic because they mistake it for food in dumpsites. When this happens the plastic can block their stomachs and make them sick. Worrisome is that some animals even die because of plastic conatimination. Over time, plastic waste can also release harmful chemicals into the soil and water the result affecting plants, animals, and people who depend on natural resources for their daily lives. This then puts a hravy strain on health budgets.
It shoulb inernalised that plastic pollution does not only harm the environment but it also affects the health and well being of people living nearby and around it. When waste piles up in open areas, it attracts insects such as flies and mosquitoes and flies. It can also attract rats and other pests that end up visiting houses making a menacy. These pests can spread diseases and create unhealthy living conditions with chances of snakes folowing them since its food to them.
Plastic waste can also pollute rivers as is the case in Mukuvisi, streams, and other water sources. When plastics are carried by wind or rain, they often end up in water bodies because they are very light. This pollution makes the water terribly unsafe for drinking, washing, and farming.
In some communities, people burn plastic waste because they do not know how else to dispose of it. However, burning plastic releases toxic smoke into the air. Breathing this smoke can cause serious health complication that are difficult to treat, including breathing difficulties and other illnesses. Plastic waste management is very important for the safety of communities.
